With all of them working together in their respective areas, supper was fabulous. Conversation flowed from one subject to the other with everyone contributing despite being a varied group who’d come together from different ages and areas. Keen was happy they meshed so well. They all laughed and teased as they cleared the table after the meal.

“Hey, what’s for dessert?” Keen asked, remembering they’d talked about it but not seeing anything.

“Gee, I don’t know. You all wanted something different, so we didn’t know what to do,” Sandy said.

“That’s okay,” said Lance, trying not to sound disappointed.

“Shit, don’t believe it. I know her, and she’s not about to have a big meal without a dessert. Come on, Sandy, ‘fess up,” Keen said, laughing as she blushed at being caught in the lie. She and Phoebe got up and went to the pantry and came back with two big boxes.

“You all go on in and get settled in the living room. Phoebe and I will get dessert ready. Coffee all around?” she asked, and they all agreed. She fixed decaf, and she and Phoebe giggled as they prepared the individual desserts.

Phoebe went in and sat on the couch with Keen and Lance, and Sandy carried in a large tray with chocolate cake, strawberry pie, a hot fudge sundae, key lime pie, and a big brownie on it.

Lance jumped up to take it from her.

“Wicked!” he exclaimed as he passed it around so each could get their preference. Sandy went back for the coffee and Kale went to help her bring it in. They sat around in the living room and there were sounds of happy feasting as they devoured the desserts. There wasn’t much conversation as they finished their treats.

Keen looked over to find that Phoebe was sitting quietly, with tears rolling down her face. Not wanting to embarrass her, he leant over her to ask, quietly, “You okay, honey?”

She nodded and handed him the plate from her lap where she’d been using her good hand to eat the key lime pie. He took it and leaned to shield her a little so the others wouldn’t see her as she dried the tears on her face.

“Thank you, darling boy.” She patted his shoulder to let him know it was okay to move. Sandy gathered the dishes, and Kale got up to help, leaving Keen and Lance flanking Phoebe on the couch.

“What is it, hon? Does your arm hurt?” Lance asked, clearly wanting to make her more comfortable.

“No, it’s silly. I’m just so happy.” She laughed, a little embarrassed. “I haven’t had this good a time in years. I can’t believe how nice you all have been to me. This has been a wonderful day.” The sentence that was unspoken seemed as loud as the one that was heard. I wish I didn’t have to go back home.

“Hey, we’ve enjoyed it as much as you have. You don’t have to act like we’re doing you a favour.” Keen wanted her to know she was important.
